October 20th – Spirit Day

On October 20, 2010, Spirit Day was designated as a community response to the epidemic of suicides from homophobic bullying.  One of the more prominent cases was the suicide of Tyler Clementi, who leaped from the George Washington Bridge after a video of him kissing another boy was streamed on the Internet by two classmates.  The “It Gets Better” and Tyler projects were also started in response to this persisting tragedy.  LGBT individuals, allies, and friends wear purple annually on this day to show solidarity.  The color is derived from the respective stripe on Gilbert Baker’s Rainbow Flag to represent “spirit.”

For more on the LGBT community’s campaigns against bullying please listen to the November 08, 2010 and October 18, 2010 episodes of Out-FM (those are direct mp3 links).
